The pressure eased, just enough he could make out the next words. He screamed until he was hoarse and then beyond. How could he describe a pain that was far more than just bodily agony? More than just broken bones and ruptured organs? He couldn’t, and that made it so much worse to bear. The claw somehow dug deeper, and all he could feel was the pain. The void below the eye parted to reveal a claw the size of a greatsword, reaching out of the darkness and not even pausing as it pierced skin and muscle at his collar. In the black, a fluorescent red eye with a slit pupil opened to a width which easily matched the man’s torso. It was the faintest of noises, but it was there. He was on the verge of giving up when a sound reached his ears. He hung in the darkness, waiting in silence, for something. His limbs stopped moving, strength faded away into insignificant spasms. However long he kept struggling on for, he didn't know. It made all the difference in the world, because no matter how slight the chance was, he wouldn’t give up on living. Since he couldn’t see anything, and all he could feel in his chest was the spreading numbness, that likelihood dropped.īy process of elimination, he was still alive. He’d know he was drowning if his lungs began to burn and his face went blue. He tossed the thought aside as soon as it came to him. It did nothing but increase the never-lightening weight of the blackness around him. He pushed his arms out and swept them behind him in a poor mimicry of a breast-stroke. He tried to push through the inky darkness, his lungs restricting and choking him as the void encroached on him. No shred of warmth seemed to exist, either then or after. A poison, seeping into every inch of his body it could. The freezing reached down into his bones, sank into his blood. Until this instant he simply had not been, then the next moment he was.īefore he could even comprehend the situation fully, or think how he had ended up in such a place, a singular thought and feeling gripped him.Įverything was cold, like ice but a thousand times worse. No light blazed around him, no sound greeted his ears. He opened his eyes to a pitch-black void.
